Coastal Living – Lori Hannum, Interior Designer

Coastal Living       Whether it's your vacation home or your permanent residence, your home should feel like a retreat – relaxing and rejuvenating. And who wouldn't find a beach house to be relaxing? So let's define what makes a home a beach house. Surprisingly, it does not have to be located at the beach, or even on the coast. A beach house can be anywhere you want it to be. So, even if you don't live on waterfront property, you can still create the look and feel of your own private oasis with these guidelines.

Most importantly, keep things simple with uncluttered spaces; easy-care fabrics and furniture; soothing, pale accent colors used sparingly with whites and neutrals; and mix in a variety of natural, textural…READ FULL ARTICLE

Spotlight on Local Artist, Suzanne McCourt

Suzanne McCourt

At SC41 we value beauty, design, and the quality of the furniture that we provide for our customers as well as supporting local businesses. Community is very important to us as is the beauty of design that we can provide for your home. This is one of the biggest reasons we love to support our local artists and display their wonderful creations in our showrooms. One of our valued local artists is Suzanne McCourt who has not only gained local fame, but international as well and we are proud to display her art here at SC41 Furniture.

McCourt grew up in the Pacific Northwest and started her career as an artist at the early age of six when she won second place in a drawing contest for her picture of a cat drinking milk. From that point on McCourt's prowess as an artist only expanded.
Her art has been shown in many galleries, exhibitions, and museums, as well as being published in art magazines. Not only has McCourt created an amazing career for herself as an artist, but she also owns and created Surf City Coffee Co. with her husband Dan McCourt. McCourt has gained recognition as local business owner and artist with her art containing a unique modern flare that fits perfectly into the Santa Cruz artistic community and style.

McCourt works in a variety of different mediums when creating her art work as well as several different themes. When creating her art she will use anything from acrylic to mixed media and she does not limit herself to one genre, but will create paintings of still life, abstract, figurative, landscapes, and seascape paintings. When asked about her passion for painting McCourt states "I love globs of paint, brushstrokes of color, the surprise of texture and passion of creativity." One of her most renowned paintings is of the Guitar Man – Blues Guitar. This painting is acrylic and mixed media on canvas and each painting she creates of the Guitar Man contains a piece of sheet music from "Birth of the Blues" whether it is visible or not. McCourt's art works are intended to draw in the viewer and allow them to help create the story that each piece of art is intended to tell. Opposed to just having her own story for each art piece she wants the viewers imagination to be at work and to have it be meaningful to each individual who views it.       Guitar Man – Blues Guitar

Each piece of art that McCourt creates is fun, vibrant, and full of color, texture and life. Every work of art she creates is unique and one of a kind, even if it's the same subject as another art piece it will be slightly different. They are all wonderfully engaging for the viewer. We are proud to display the art work of Suzanne McCourt with other local artists at SC41 Furniture and we invite you to come by and enjoy them as well.

Have you ever wanted to travel to the rainforests? Well, whether you're an intrepid adventure seeker or an armchair traveler you shouldn't miss this slide presentation of the Peruvian Amazon. The evening will include photos of the Amazon and the Yanesha community, plus information about PATS - The Partnership and Technology for Sustainability, which is working to save the endangered rainforests through education and fair trade practices. The stories are fascinating, troubling and inspiring.

We'll enjoy some Peruvian treats and there will be indigenous crafts available for purchase as well - and you don't even have to buy a plane ticket. We hope you can join us.

Saturday, August 6, 6:30-8:30pm, SC41, 2647 41st Avenue, Soquel.
